Decide whether to launch before choosing where to paddle
A weather card is only the beginning. A sound decision combines warnings, wind direction, water, the return leg, equipment, and your own ability. Any critical uncertainty is a valid reason to change the plan.
Change the plan
Gusts are building, cross-wind makes the return uncertain, visibility is falling, tide or flow is changing, or the route lacks an early exit. Choose sheltered water, shorten the trip, or postpone.
Launch with an exit plan
You checked local forecasts and warnings, the shoreline observation agrees, and the return direction, backup landing points, companions, and shore contact are clear.
SIX CHECKS
Weather and warnings
Check wind direction and gusts, not just temperature and rain. Do not launch near a thunderstorm. After the last thunder, wait at least 30 minutes before reassessing.
Changing water
At the coast, check tide, swell, and rip currents. On rivers, check flow, level, and obstructions. Lakes can build short, steep waves as wind rises. Look again at the water's edge.
Route and return
Ask whether the return will be into wind or current, whether daylight is sufficient, and where at least one backup landing point is located.
Equipment and contact
Wear suitable buoyancy, choose the correct leash for the environment, keep a phone in a waterproof pouch, and carry protection and supplies for temperature, sun, and distance.
Ability and company
Match the route to your actual experience and condition that day. Share the place, expected return time, and change plan with someone ashore. Paddle with others in unfamiliar or complex water.
Access and local rules
Confirm opening hours, access rights, boat traffic, on-site warnings, and local requirements. A launch candidate is not a safety certification.
